IT asset naming convention builder

Build consistent device names from a site's UN/LOCODE, check them against Windows and DNS limits, then copy them or download a CSV. Your settings are saved in the page link so you can share them with your team.

Naming convention tips

Keep names at 15 characters or fewer

Windows computer names (NetBIOS) are limited to 15 characters. Active Directory will truncate longer names, which causes duplicate or confusing objects. The builder flags any name over the limit.

Use only letters, numbers and hyphens

DNS hostnames allow A–Z, 0–9 and hyphens. Underscores and spaces break DNS registration, and some systems treat names as case-sensitive, so pick one case and keep to it.

Put the location first

Starting with the site code groups devices by location in every sorted list: AD, DHCP leases, monitoring dashboards and your CMDB. Using the UN/LOCODE means codes never clash between countries.

Don't encode things that change

Avoid owner names, IP addresses or OS versions in the name. Keep those in your asset inventory, not the hostname.
